Love and Judgment

One modern view of God seems to be that of an unconditionally loving and supportive "higher energy." How does this fit in with traditional teachings and with our own beliefs? While the Qur'an often reveals Allah to be infinitely loving, he is also portrayed as strict and stern with transgressors of his law.
